THE GOOD:
So I think I was feeling this CD from the very first song but being a true reviewer/critic I knew that I had to listen to the whole thing from beginning to end. I got what the artist was going for and I think that he pulled it off in amazing fashion. Hats off to Sonny Lewis for making a mix tape that fans and artists can be proud of. In his own words, He definitely, “separates the spitters from the bullshitters,” and is “head of the class” if not the teacher. My personal picks are “Music,” “Can’t Be Mad,” “What Type Are You” and “The Oath.” I think he is a true emcee and lyricist. No matter his genre of hip-hop, Sonny is a voice that people should look out for.
THE BAD:
Despite the fact that he can flow on the microphone; it does not hide the fact that it is monotone and the same on every track. He might want to try and change up his flow every once in a while when he does different kinds of beats, especially on those R&B tracks. When you are recording you need to check your volumes, step back from the mic, or get a good filter. I think that he has a lot to offer as a rapper but he should be a beast on every song, going for his and not letting the track overshadow his voice.
THE TRUTH:
I actually like this mixtape better than a lot that I have listened to on outhiphop.com. I do think that Sonny should make every song a full song with a verse, chorus, bridge, etc. I want a real record from this artist. Even though I felt the emotions poured out on this mix-tape from having a good time to going through some very emotional things in life, at one point near the end I thought that he was going to cry. He held his own with the other rappers that he collaborated with on the CD but he shouldn’t let them outshine him. He has everything he needs to be the person that represents this gay rap thing, and just needs to build upon it and make it better.
THE RECOMMENDATION:
Mash It, Download It, Play It, Love It! A True Mix-Tape for the Movement!
