CD Review: CAPTAIN MAGIK

"Welcome to Magikland" is the opening intro and invitation to CAPTAIN MAGIK'S self titled debut CD 'CAPTAIN MAGIK'; where he promises that he will be "meaner than a drag queen having a bad hair day". SIDE EFFECTS is the first track with the warning: "This CD might make you gay", a fun tale of Captain Magik's journey through a gay wonderland with a limp wrist and trips to the hair stylist and Broadway shows. "Abracadabra!" - - Magik even appears in Crawford, Texas on the ranch watching The Golden Girls with President Bush. Captain Magik pulls out every trick from his lyrical hat turning gay stereotypes into a badge of gay honor. Since I am already gay, the only side effect I got was a big dose of pride. I wanted to pull a Rainbow Flag out of my ass after listening to this jam!
HOMOHOP is a Dr. Dre inspired beat and a welcome to the "gayborhood". Producer, Mr. Z keeps all the beats sick and fresh! YOUNG, GAY & PROUD is a great anthem especially for LGBT youth. It is a call to "stand up 4 your rights" and Magik's drive to be "the #1 Homo on Logo". Stand out track and future first video is, DILEMMA, Captain Magik's coming out story. Dilemma has a beautiful and haunting chorus mixed with hot scratches by DJ MATTY J. NO MORE SECRETS continues our coming out journey with Magik's claim he will be the "first gay rapper to go platinum". "Put your hands in the air if you're proud to be Queer", P.N.P. is a Naughty by Nature styled classic rap and my favorite cut on the album. The track, ADDICTS, tackles drug addiction like a Linkin Park rap/rock fusion. BATHROOM STALL is reminiscent and just as clever as the story telling of Eminem, a funny tale about the airport antics of Senator Larry Craig. "Cough 3 times, shake your leg. Tap your foot, it's the Larry Craig"
The cautionary tale about HIV, DIE FOR LOVE is the only song that was a bit cheesy and over the top, but Magik's message of staying protected did not get lost. FREEDOM FIGHTERS close out the CD and finds Captain Magik over his dilemma and playing "no more Mr. Nice guy". He is the "white boy who put gay in gayngsta" and dares anyone to bash him. The CD is indeed a magical journey of a young man's dilemma coming out the closet and ending in a place where he is unapologetically -- young, gay, and proud. Captain Magik has definitely put his spell over the out hip hop scene, and the only dilemma is for the music industry. Gay or Straight how can they ignore such fresh and creative new talent? Captain Magik, 'CAPTAIN MAGIK' gets 4 out of 5 Rainbow Mics.

Ive heard Magick's CD on the road with Unity Tour 08. I enjoy his enthusiasm on the album. His lyrics are definitely oozing with gay pride. But some of his tracks are a little too copy "ICP" for me. It sounds to me like he repeats alot of his hooks or bridges over and over again throughout his songs. But....with time will come perfection. He's definitely a force to be reckoned with in the OHH community! Concentrate on them 16's and not so much on repeating the hooks, and shit will be bomb!!
Oh yea...he is a really nice, kick ass dude too :)
Bigg Ups...Nugget
MAGIKS ALBUM IS A REFLECTION OF THE HIP-HOP WERE HE'S FROM. I LIKE HIS ALBUM, FOR WHATS THAT WORTH. MAGIK IS ONE OF THE BEST STORY TELLERS. HE CAN MAKE YOU LAUGH AND THINK WHICH IS HARD TO DO. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE WAS THE COVER, IT MAKES YOU THINK IT'S GONNA BE ANOTHER COCK AND ASS LGBT ALBUM LIKE OTHERS I WONT NAME. WHAT I LIKE BEST IS CAPTAIN MAGIK IS DOING HIM AND NOT TRYING TOBE A GAY KNOCK OFF OF SOMEONE ELSE.
I'm really feelin the album. I like dude's flow and his beats/production. And I think that Magik's got a lot of charisma -- he's a distinct voice in this whole homo-hop thiing. As far as the cover/album art goes, yeah -- it coulda been a lil more inspired, but whatever, the music is the main thing.
I have to say that I disagree with some of the comments posted. The hooks in these songs are what's going to attract new listeners to Magik's music. I myself had not been into the rap thing but now I am a hardcore convert. I find myself humming these songs at work. Bathroom Stall is freakin' genius, and Best Friends is haunting. This album has legs and I feel it's going to be a category breaker. You even say yourself that his music has diverse direction. I see this album as a guide that will open my eyes to new and exciting ideas. Don't knock the Captain! He will easily be the number one Homo on Logo!
yo this is one album that surprise me and deffintly went above and beyound my expectations keep doing you magic... i see ya tricks homie:)
MAGIK HAS BEEN IN MY TOP EMCEES, CHECK MY PAGE!
. A voice calling for empathy, understanding, and respect. Through the vehicle of music this artist first looks within himself then asks us to do the same. Courageously, Captin Magik has created tracks that moved my body, mind, and soul. A TRUE POET, I was inspired by Magik!!!
i personally bought the album and i have no regrets. it is a solid effort from top to bottom.
