I went to watch a live hip-hop band the other week at a local club near to where I live. I arrived early as I often do to watch the band set up and chat with the musicians before sound check and performance. There’s always something to learn by talking to these guys, as a lot of bands and musicians often have a lot to do with web designers and the print industry, through posters, flyers, business cards and stickers (musicians love custom stickers – don’t ask me why!). The thing that I really noticed was the band’s backdrop that they began to unpack and then put up whilst I was watching them. Firstly, they erected a simple frame consisting of two tall microphone stands placed six feet apart, behind the drummer. A long pole was then placed across the top of these two stands to create a large ‘n’ shaped structure. They unrolled a printed banner and then used zip-ties to suspend it from the frame they had just made. The overall effect was absolutely great, and in combination with the array of stage lighting that they had, it really helped to enhance their stage performance and the overall presence of the performance.

I was rather impressed with this setup, and figured it would be good to use something similar for the event I would be staging in a few weeks. After the gig, I chatted to them about printing a banner, and where they had got there’s done. They’d got theirs done online and it was really easy to get done. Apparently, they had a logo idea that wasn’t print ready, but the designers at the printers that they used were more than happy to develop the logo, make it print ready AND let the band have a copy of the logo for them to use on all of their other printed materials. This is great for the print company, as their benevolent nature may well help them to get more work, and it’s great for the band as it will enable them to really push the bands brand with the same logo on every piece of promotional material that they offer. As I said before – posters, cards, leaflets and flyers are all something that a band will get done. I asked them about this and it transpired that they used the same print company that did the backdrop banner for everything else too. Just shows, doesn’t it? I little help can sometimes come back in the form of more work and a better relationship all round. Karma, eh?
